WorkForce West Virginia’s Unemployment Insurance Program initiative connects unemployed and underemployed West Virginians with resources
Published: February 24, 2025CHARLESTON, W.Va. – WorkForce West Virginia today announced a new initiative to increase access to and understanding of the Unemployment Insurance (UI) program. The primary goal of this outreach effort is to ensure that more West Virginians understand if they are eligible for the program, know how to apply and have the necessary information to complete their applications.
The UI program serves as a vital financial support system for individuals and their families during periods of unemployment or underemployment, providing a safety net until full-time employment is secured. To be eligible for UI benefits, individuals must have lost their job through no fault of their own or be working less than their full-time hours. Participants in the program must be able and available to work full-time. Staff is available to provide guidance on eligibility requirements, assistance with filing claims and support services as needed.
“WorkForce West Virginia is dedicated to helping individuals navigate the unemployment insurance process with ease and confidence, while providing resources and training opportunities to assist job seekers in obtaining employment,” said Scott Adkins, Acting Commissioner of WorkForce West Virginia. “By reaching out and providing necessary information and assistance, we want to ensure that everyone who qualifies for UI benefits can successfully navigate the application process and receive the support they need.”
Individuals who meet the eligibility criteria are encouraged to file their UI claims online at uc.workforcewv.org. For those who may have limited access to computers or the internet, WorkForce West Virginia local offices are equipped with necessary resources including computers for filing UI claims. Assistance is also available by phone for applicants who require additional support.
To apply for UI benefits, claimants should have the following information and documentation readily available:
- Government-issued photo identification
- Social Security number
- Contact information for most recent employer(s)
- Dates of employment
- The reason for unemployment
- Wage records (such as pay stubs or W-2 forms)
