State Unemployment Rate 7.5 Percent in July

West Virginia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased one-tenth of a percentage point to 7.5 percent in July 2015. The number of unemployed state residents increased 1,600 to 59,100. Total unemployment was up 7,900 over the year. The national unemployment rate remained at 5.3 percent.

Total nonfarm payroll employment decreased 2,200 in July. The goods-producing sector declined 900, while the service-providing sector fell 1,300.

Within the goods-producing sector, employment decreased by 300 in mining and logging and 700 in construction. Manufacturing gained 100 jobs. Within the service-providing sector, employment increases included 600 in in trade, transportation and utilities, 100 in educational and health services, and 100 in other services. Employment declines included 100 in information, 400 in financial activities, 300 in leisure and hospitality and 1,300 in government. Employment in professional and business services was unchanged.

Since July 2014, total nonfarm payroll employment has decreased by 19,100. Employment gains included 1,000 in manufacturing, 700 in trade, transportation, and utilities, 700 in professional and business services, and 1,600 in educational and health services. Employment declines included 3,000 in mining and logging, 5,400 in construction, 100 in information, 1,100 in financial activities, 2,500 in leisure and hospitality, 400 in other services, and 10,600 in government.

West Virginia's not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased four-tenths of a percentage point to 7.6 percent.
