State Unemployment Rate 7.4 Percent in June
Published: August 26, 2015West Virginia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased two-tenths of a percentage point to 7.4 percent in June 2015. The number of unemployed state residents increased 1,100 to 57,500. Total unemployment was up 5,300 over the year. The national unemployment rate declined two-tenths of a percentage point to 5.3 percent.
Total nonfarm payroll employment decreased 4,500 in June. The goods-producing sector declined 1,500, while the service-providing sector fell 3,000.
Within the goods-producing sector, employment decreased by 500 in mining and logging, construction and manufacturing. Within the service-providing sector, employment declines included 900 in in trade, transportation and utilities, 100 in information, 200 in professional and business services, 500 in educational and health services, 100 in other services, and 2,100 in government. Employment increases included 800 in financial activities, and 100 in leisure and hospitality.
Since June 2014, total nonfarm payroll employment has decreased by 8,800. Employment gains included 700 in manufacturing, 1,300 in professional and business services, and 1,000 in educational and health services. Employment declines included 2,900 in mining and logging, 4,300 in construction, 800 in trade, transportation, and utilities, 100 in information, 100 in financial activities, 2,200 in leisure and hospitality, 600 in other services, and 800 in government.
West Virginia's not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased three-tenths of a percentage point to 7.2 percent.
